Born and raised in Newfoundland and adopted by Northern Irish parents, Oonagh came overseas to Nova Scotia to attend Acadia University in 1989. Oonagh graduated in 1993 with what is now known as a Bachelor of Community Development. She went on to work for the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth before returning to the valley in 1999 to work at Acadia. Since then, Oonagh has held a number of positions at Acadia from planning Welcome Week to advising students. She is currently the Executive Director of Alumni Affairs with the Office of Advancement.
In 2006, she graduated with a Masters degree with a focus of study on leisure behaviour and wellness in a time of significant life transition. Oonagh then began to teach academic courses at Acadia.
It was her love of Wolfville and its possibilities that inspired Oonagh to run for council in 2016. After one term on council, Oonagh decided to run again, having completely bought into the importance and influence of municipal politics.
Oonagh has two grown sons, Evan and Matthew. A BBA graduate of 2021, Evan is currently experiencing tremendous success in the world of fitness, nutrition and wellness as a social influencer and Matthew is currently in his third year of a Bachelor of Kinesiology, plays for the Axemen Football team and is a SMILE leader. Oonagh enjoys spending time with her family, including the four legged ones – Jaxon, Fergus and Pipalook.
