A new mural is being created on Main Street, on the newly renovated Carl's Independent. The piece is being created by an artistic duo, Victoria Brumwell and Swade Owens, who were selected by a panel of staff from Loblaws and the Town's Public Art working group.
Victoria Brumwell and Swade Owens are partners both in life and art. They are small business owners and multidisciplinary artists who have collaborated on many projects over the course of their careers, including large scale murals. Graduates of NSCAD University, Swade and Victoria are established members of the local artist community in Halifax.
The mural on Carl’s Independent will feature familiar local landscapes, produce that is grown locally such as grapes, apples and corn, and farm animals, paying tribute to the region’s longstanding agricultural heritage—an integral part of Wolfville’s history and identity. Swade and Victoria are inspired by folk art, so the mural will have a simplistic, rustic feel that honours the imagery being featured. The overall effect will be bright, accessible and contemporary, a celebration of the abundance of the region.
With this mural, Victoria and Swade aim to honour Wolfville’s character as both an idyllic rural town and a hub of creativity and culture. They believe in the power of art to transform shared spaces, spark conversation, and inspire collective pride, and they are honoured to contribute to Wolfville’s evolving cultural landscape through this project.
