After exploring the possibility of a combined fire service with Greenwich and Wolfville Volunteer Fire Departments, a decision has been made to keep the neighbouring departments operating as separate entities. The Municipality of the County of Kings, the Town of Wolfville, the Greenwich Fire Commission and the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department originally agreed to pursue a merged fire service in April of 2023, but it was ultimately determined the merger could not proceed when the location of a new Fire Hall could not be decided.
The Town of Wolfville and the Municipality of the County of Kings have instead agreed to focus on renewing their current intermunicipal fire service agreement and working toward building a new fire station to serve the Wolfville Fire District.
“This process helped us determine the best way to support the residents of Wolfville and surrounding communities that are part of our fire district,” said Wolfville Mayor Jodi MacKay. “Across the region we have some of the best people working to keep us safe and protected. We will continue to work with Greenwich and are grateful to have them as friends and neighbours.”
The Municipality of the County of Kings, Greenwich Fire Commission and Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department have agreed to negotiate a new fire service operating agreement between the Municipality and Fire Department, which will eventually result in the Greenwich Fire Commission dissolving to allow for a modernization of the governance structure for the fire service.
“We are keen to continue serving our community in the years to come, and hope to leverage the strong existing relationships in the local fire service to find ways to continuously improve service delivery for area residents moving forward,” said Greenwich Fire Chief Jason Ripley.
The Municipality is committed to working with service partners to support the continued delivery of dependable fire protection services in the Greenwich and Wolfville Fire Districts.
“We’ve spent a lot of time talking about what is best for the residents and businesses of the communities served by our dedicated volunteer fire departments,” said Municipality of the County of Kings Mayor Dave Corkum. “We are fortunate to have exceptional local fire departments, and we look forward to renewing commitments with our skilled service providers in Greenwich and Wolfville.”
The Wolfville Volunteer Fire Department responded to 268 calls in 2024 and is served by 43 members. The Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department responded to 93 calls in 2024 and is served by 46 members.
