What, when and how you burn can make a huge difference to the safety of our community so before you start a fire in your yard, please make sure you check both the Wolfville Outdoor Fire By-Law as well as the Provincial Burn Safe Site.
Here are some key points to remember:
- No burning general waste: Please refrain from burning general waste or yard debris such as leaves, brush, weeds, grass, and similar vegetation. Please only burn seasoned dry firewood or other solid fuel.
- Observe Fire Bans and Weather: Always check for any fire bans issued by the Department of Natural Resources before burning and be alert if weather conditions may jeopardize the ability to control the fire.
- Use Proper Appliances: If you’re using a fire appliance, please make sure it meets the requirements set out in the Outdoor Fire Bylaw. Your appliance should be made of steel, stone, brick, or concrete, with a spark arrestor or mesh screen on top.
- Safe Distance: Place your fire appliance at least 15 feet away from any buildings, structures, or property lines.
- One at a time: Please limit your outdoor fires to one at a time per property.
- Have Fire Protection Equipment: Make sure you have fire protection equipment nearby incase of emergencies.
If you’re unsure if your set-up meets requirements or have additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Wolfville Volunteer Fire Department at (902)-542-5635 or the Wolfville Bylaw Enforcement Department at (902)-599-2866.
