Ten years after his death, Alex Colville is being re-remembered in Wolfville thanks to a new outdoor art project.

The Alex Colville Wolfville Gallery installation started on October 31, with pieces mounted on the side of the building that borders the eastern edge of the Post Office Park. The Gallery will feature reproductions of nine iconic images, most of which were created by Colville when he lived in Wolfville.

It’s fitting that the artist will have his works on display close to the Town's war memorial as Colville was appointed an official war artist in 1944 and painted in England, France, Holland, and Germany.

In 1973, Colville moved his family to Wolfville, his wife, Rhoda Wright’s, hometown. He painted during this time, and he also served ten years as Chancellor of Acadia University.

In July 2013, Alex Colville died at his home in Wolfville.

The new installation comes after years of work by the Art in Public Spaces Committee that was supported by annual funding from Town Council. This new showcase is intended to reach a whole new generation, exposing, and celebrating the amazing collection of work that Colville created.

The Alex Colville Wolfville Gallery features nine reproductions of iconic paintings, a photo of Colville, mounted in a door frame, and an interpretive panel.

An accessible walkway is being planned for the site.

An event to celebrate the installation is being planned for Saturday, November 18 at 2pm at the Gallery wall. Full details will be shared soon.

Mayor Donovan joined municipal leaders from across the province to share support for the Municipal Reform Act, Bill 340, at the Law Amendments Committee on Monday afternoon. Bill 340 outlines municipal contributions and grants, providing the basis for a new service exchange agreement between the province and Nova Scotia’s municipalities.

Bill 340 includes a modernized financial capacity grant formula that would provide Wolfville with an additional $276,221 each year.

“The modernized formula will allow us to better meet the demands of a growing and increasingly diverse municipality, along with changing requirements and expectations for transit, active transportation, infrastructure renewal and expansion; accessibility, equity and inclusion legislation; housing and other community services,” Mayor Donovan said in her presentation.

Mayor Donovan urged the committee to recognize how Bill 340 will support the growth and sustainability of the entire province.

“It is fair,” Mayor Donovan said in her comments about the Municipal Reform Act. “It begins to recognize that some mandatory services that municipalities have paid for, over which we have had no say, belong with the province, and (Bill 340) begins to move the needle on available infrastructure dollars for municipalities, for trunks and routes and other initiatives.”

There is a planned water service interruption scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023, starting at 8:00AM and continuing to approximately 5:00PM, or until the work is completed. The interruption will affect residents on Hillside Avenue from  civic # 23-60 inclusive and 204 Pleasant Street.

Residents are advised to stockpile the necessary water needed for this period before 8:00 am, October 31, 2023.

During the road work at the intersection of Hillside and Fairfield, local traffic only will be permitted. Detoured traffic will be redirected to Highland Avenue and across Bay Street.

Buildings in the affected area and in isolated areas elsewhere in town may temporarily experience discoloured water. If so, you can flush your system by running the cold water for several minutes. This will help eliminate any discolouration and air that may have gotten into the lines during the work. It’s best to flush through a fixture without a strainer such as a bathtub or outdoor hose bib.
