The Town of Wolfville is inviting applications for one (1) full-time (permanent seasonal) Parks Labourer with the Parks and Recreation Department. This position is part of the Service Employees International Union Local 2 and is eligible to participate in the Town’s Employee Benefits plan. 

Responsibilities include carrying out land and hardscaping, general maintenance on all Town maintained green spaces, parks and trail, and other maintenance and event set-up duties as required. 

The position requires 40 hours per week (with 11 weeks remaining this season) and may include evenings and weekends. A valid class 5 driver’s license is required. Work season typically starts in April and finishes in October.

The province is restricting travel and activities in the woods because continued hot, dry conditions have greatly increased the risk of wildfires.

The restrictions, effective as of 4 p.m. today, August 5, include:

🔴 hiking, camping, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted

🔴 trail systems through woods are off limits

🔴 camping is allowed only in campgrounds.

These and other measures are in place on provincial Crown and private land until October 15 or until conditions allow them to be lifted. The fine for violating the restrictions is $25,000.

What this means for Wolfville

As of 4pm on Tuesday, August 5, the following closures are in place:

• The Harvest Moon Trail - from Cherry Lane to Elm Ave, and from Old Dyke Lane to Woodman.
• The Millennium Trail
• Wolfville Watershed Nature Preserve on Forest Hill Road
• Reservoir Park - all trails in and out - access is only through the parking lot

Barricades and signs are being deployed and all residents and visitors are being asked to comply with this Provincial order.

The Municipality of the County of Kings, Town of Kentville, and Town of Wolfville have agreed to secure land for a proposed new Regional Recreation Facility.

Kings County Municipal Council recently entered into a Purchase and Sale Agreement with Parsons Investments Limited to acquire a parcel of land in Coldbrook. Councils for Town of Kentville and Town of Wolfville agreed to support this purchase for the Recreation Facility.

“While this Agreement has certain closing conditions, Municipal Council thought it important to advise the public that a location has been chosen,” said Municipality of the County of Kings Mayor Dave Corkum.

A parcel located off Harrington Road was selected by a working committee with representatives from the Municipality and the Towns. The three neighbouring municipal units are excited to have reached an agreement on the location, which is an important step in building a new Regional Recreation Facility in Kings County.

“We know our community has been waiting for good news on this project,” said Wolfville Mayor Jodi Mackay. “This is an important development, and we look forward to working with our partners at Kings and Kentville to support all people in our region.”

The level of involvement and commitment from each prospective partner will be determined by decisions from respective Councils, and through agreements reached by the project partners.

“Kentville’s Town Council is eager to continue working with our partners to realize the shared goal of building a Regional Recreation Facility. We are ready and willing to continue participating in important conversations about how we come together, combine resources, and deliver meaningful results, including potentially a new Kentville arena,” said Town of Kentville Mayor Andrew Zebian.

Potential locations for the Regional Recreation Facility were evaluated based on siting criteria outlined in the Kings County Regional Recreational Centre Feasibility Study. The completed feasibility study received in November 2022 included a report recommending the construction of an aquatics facility, gymnasium and track, multi-purpose areas, and support and amenity spaces.

Project partners and Parsons Investments are excited about the new facility serving as a demand generator for the region and a driving reason to upgrade the road network in the area. All parties believe this facility will encourage increased residential and commercial development.

“Having this type of facility in our region will have a significant and positive impact on workforce recruitment and retention while improving the quality of life for everyone living in the county,” said Craig Parsons of Parsons Investments Limited.

Mayor Corkum said securing land is an important step in making a Regional Recreation Facility a reality. He stressed that there is more work to be done, and the engagement is just beginning.

“We look forward to working through the closing conditions related to the land transaction, formalizing agreements with project partners, and engaging with the community and interest groups,” said Corkum.

Safesidewalks Canada will have repair technicians on site during the weeks of August 5th and August 11th to complete concrete sidewalk repairs throughout the Town.

Safesidewalks Canada uses high speed concrete saws connected to a dust suppression and vacuum system in their work. There will be intermittently loud sounds coming from their equipment and we encourage residents to keep their windows closed while their crews are on site.

The technicians will be wearing high visibility vests, and they will also block off their work site with traffic cones and barricades when actively working. Please ensure you maintain a safe distance from them at all times for your safety.

2025 Target Areas

The technicians will refer to the 2024 Sidewalk Condition Assessment report which lists all defects.  

The primary target will be the main downtown core street(s), with secondary targets being other high pedestrian count sidewalk segments near churches, senior centers, medical facilities, schools, parks, athletic facilities, post offices, etc.

Because of hot, dry conditions, there is a ban on open fires effective immediately across the entire province.

The ban was put in place today, July 30, and will remain in place until October 15 – the end of wildfire season – or until conditions improve. The fine for violating the ban is $25,000.

“We’ve had a lot of hot, dry weather, very little rain and there’s no significant rain in the forecast in the near future,” said Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources. “We’ve had a lot of small, manageable fires this month and conditions are now ripe for any small fire to grow larger. Nobody wants a repeat of the devastation we experienced in 2023. I ask all Nova Scotians to co-operate, respect the burn ban and save their campfires and other open fires for a safer time.”

The ban applies to open fires such as campfires, bonfires, brush fires, fires in chimeneas and any other fire that is not enclosed and uses wood as the fuel. Unlike gas or charcoal fires, sparks could escape from an open wood fire and cause a wildfire.

Non-woodburning devices like charcoal and gas barbeques and gas stoves are allowed to be used, following manufacturer’s instructions.

Quick Facts:

• the ban was put in place through a proclamation under the Forests Act
• the Province’s BurnSafe map, which lets people know where and when burning is permitted, will remain red while the proclamation is in effect, meaning open fires are not allowed
• the proclamation overrides any permits that have been issued for industrial burning
• the ban applies to all private property and provincial lands, including parks and protected areas; the Province does not have jurisdiction over federal land
• people are not banned from entering the woods at this time, but that is another possible tool to help reduce the risk of wildfires, if needed
