Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Wear orange

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.

Orange Shirt Day is a commemorative day led by Indigenous communities to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools on children, families, and communities. It honours Indigenous children who were lost in the residential school system.

The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced. This day reminds us that “Every Child Matters”.

LAKE GEORGE, KINGS COUNTY, SEPTEMBER 29, 11:15 PM

Windy conditions are causing the Lake George wildfire to grow. An accurate estimate is difficult given the amount of smoke – the rough estimate is 300 hectares. It is moving from the northern end of Lake George eastward toward the northern end of Aylesford Lake.

Further evacuations were ordered by the Municipality of Kings County. There were 17 Department of Natural Resources (DNR) firefighters working with the local fire department this evening, supported by 4 NWT 802 and 2 Quebec 415 aircraft. All are returning at first light with heavy equipment to build fire breaks. The fire will be monitored overnight. Next update tomorrow morning

As a symbol of reconciliation, the Town of Wolfville will fly the Survivors' Flag through to the end of October.

The Survivors’ Flag is an expression of remembrance, meant to honour residential school Survivors and all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada.

Each element depicted on the flag was carefully selected by Survivors from across Canada, who were consulted in the flag’s creation.

Please be advised that Front Street will be closed from Harbourside Drive to Central Avenue. Only local traffic will be permitted access on Front Street, between Elm Street and Central Avenue. There will be no water disruption during this time.

Deep Roots is leading the fun with a festival parade on Saturday, September 27.

• Time: 11:45 AM - 12:30 PM
• Starts at Clock Park -> along Main Street -> left onto Central Ave -> right onto Front Street -> left into Waterfront Park (parade ends here)

Seven barricades will be placed along the route to pause traffic as the parade passes and Deep Roots volunteers will be stationed along the route to assist.

The Wolfville Fire Department will also be present. 

Motorists are asked to use caution around the parade and follow the direction of Town staff and parade volunteers.

The Town of Wolfville has partnered with Acadia University to provide an Indigenous Film Mawio'mi.

Multiple documentary films will be screened between September 28 and October 4. All films will be screened in the K.C. Irving Centre Auditorium and all will be free of charge.

All community members are invited to watch these documentaries; to learn from and better understand indigenous experience and perspective.

We invite you to join us at the first-ever Indigenous Film Mawio’mi at Acadia University, a student-led initiative dedicated to advancing the journey toward reconciliation.

From Sunday, September 28, 2025, through Saturday, October 4, 2025, we will host nightly screenings of Indigenous films and documentaries in the KCIC Auditorium. Each evening offers an opportunity to engage with stories that reflect the voices, experiences, and resilience of Indigenous peoples.

Our Mawio’mi will conclude on Saturday, October 4, at 2:00 p.m., coinciding with Sisters in Spirit Day, with a special screening of Finding Dawn at the Beveridge Arts Centre. This powerful film shines a light on the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Children in Canada.

There is no cost to attend. However, as part of our commitment to community, Politics students will be collecting donations of new, unused socks in support of the Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Centre and its outreach to our unhoused community members. We encourage all attendees to contribute if they are able.
