There are now two openings for volunteer Lay Person positions on Acadia University’s Senate.  As per page 4 of the Senate Constitution and By Laws, the Lay Persons are people “nominated by the Senate Nominating Committee who are not eligible for membership under the roles and categories laid out above provided they are not full-time employees of Acadia at the time they are appointed lay members”. 

What is the role? 

The Lay Person is a voting member of Senate and brings an independent and external perspective to Acadia’s academic decision making and deliberations.  The Lay Person acts as an advocate for public interest- a voice for the role of Acadia as a contributor to society and to the community.  The Lay Person could be someone with past Acadia experience or could be a community member with no existing connection.

What are the expectations? 

There are normally ten monthly Senate meetings per year from September to June, with a duration of two to three hours each.  Review of the Agenda and Minutes and related documentation requires approximately an hour of preparation per meeting.  The meetings for 2023-2024 will be in hybrid modality, so the incumbent will be able to attend meetings in person or online for at least the first year. 

This is a volunteer opportunity, with no remuneration.

Who are we looking for? 

The Lay Person recognizes and values Acadia University as a contributor to a healthy and robust Wolfville, Annapolis Valley, and Nova Scotia.  The Lay Person has a willingness to ask questions and contribute to discussions collegially at Senate meetings.  The Lay Person handles business beyond what is recorded in the public Senate Minutes with discretion and professionalism.

Do you know someone who would be interested in contributing to Acadia in this way?  If you know of anyone who would be interested in being nominated (or self-nominating) as a Lay Person on Senate for the July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026 term, please send along a CV/resume and/or statement of interest to Stephen Henderson (stephen.henderson@acadiau.ca) by September 30, 2023.  Please indicate whether you would be interested in serving for 2 years (until June 2025) or for 3 years (until June 2026), as the two positions are for different terms.  The election of the Lay Person is scheduled to take place at the October meeting of Senate.  

As a Town (that's Wolfville) and Gown (that's Acadia) Community, the first weeks in September are busy ones!

We're happy to welcome new and returning students to Wolfville and everyone should expect the community to be a bit busier in the days ahead.

Expect traffic to be a bit slower along Main Street on September 2nd for move-in day, and for the matriculation procession on Saturday afternoon. Then, on Monday, from noon to 7pm, Main Street will be closed for our Welcome to Wolfville Street Party from Elm to Central Ave.

Here are some other events to be aware of:

Saturday, September 2nd:

• Starting at 8:30am, more than 850 first year students will move into residence.
• A special 'Student Welcome' themed Saturday Wolfville Farmers' Market day is planned that is especially focused on orienting new students/parents to the community and getting folks ready for the school year, from 8:30am - 1:00pm.
• A formal Matriculation Ceremony will take place in University Hall at 2:00pm.
• Acadia Football will take on St. FX, kicking off at 3:00pm.

 Sunday, September 3rd:

• Orientation begins for all on and off-campus students and will officially kick-off with a welcome ceremony on the university hall stairs at 11:00am led by Mi’kmaq Elder-In-Residence, Joe Michael.
• Students have a welcome barbecue at 12:00pm.

 Monday, September 4th: 

• The 2nd Annual Welcome to Wolfville: Street Fair from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Main Street. This is a family friendly event with games, food, live music, and fun. All faculty, staff, students, town residents, and their families are invited to join in the fun.
• Returning students move back to residence and to Wolfville.

This tender will require various concrete projects, sidewalks concrete curb & gutter, tactile walking surface indicators (TWSI) plates,  driveway reinstatements etc.

The western sidewalk on Gaspereau Avenue, from Main to Acadia, will be under repair starting on Monday, August 28.

The sidewalk on the east side of Gaspereau will be re-opened to pedestrians before this work begins. 

Work should be completed by Friday, September 1.

Thank you for your patience as we make infrastructure improvements in the Town.

Beginning the first week of September, Gary Parker Excavating Ltd. will begin scheduled maintenance and repairs on Fairfield Street. The goal of this project is to improve the underground infrastructure, including removal and replacement of sewers, water mains, and hydrants.

When the replacements are complete, and it is time to reconstruct the street, we will be adding a new concrete sidewalk along the north side of Fairfield Street, and will be adding some new streetlights and trees as well.

Temporary water service connections to area homes are being completed by the contractor, in coordination with Town of Wolfville Water Utility staff. The work may require periodic scheduled water interruptions, which will be communicated ahead of time. The street will remain open to local traffic, except during concrete work, when access will be restricted for longer periods of time with advanced notice.

The work is scheduled to be completed by November, 2023, though some work may be carried forward to the spring. 

Notifications will be provided online at www.wolfville.ca, and by hand-delivered notice when required.

This Project includes the removal and disposal of an existing corrugated steel cross culvert located near 126 Main Street, supply and installation of a concrete box culvert, replacement of existing catch basins including connection to the new culvert, sanitary sewer pipe encasement, cast-in-place headwalls complete with galvanized steel handrails, and street, curb, and asphalt walkway removal and reinstatement.

The Project includes taking all necessary measures to ensure that the bed of the adjacent watercourse is not excavated or altered.

Construction activities cannot take place below the ordinary high water mark.

The Project also includes a provisional item for water main encasement.
